Manypeople,andchildreninparticular,enjoyplayingputergames.WhileIacceptthatthesegamescansometimeshaveapositiveeffectontheuser,Ibelievethattheyaremorelikelytohaveaharmfulimpact.

Ontheonehand,videogamescanbebothentertainingandeducational.Users,orgamers,aretransportedintovirtualworldswhichareoftenmoreexcitingandengagingthanreal-lifepastimes.Fromaneducationalperspective,thesegamesencourageimaginationandcreativity,aswellasconcentration,logicalthinkingandproblemsolving,allofwhichareusefulskillsoutsidethegamingcontext.Furthermore,ithasbeenshownthatputersimulationgamescanimproveusers’motorskillsandhelptopreparethemforreal-worldtasks,suchasflyingaplane.

However,Iwouldarguethatthesebenefitsareoutweighedbythedrawbacks.Gamingcanbehighlyaddictivebecauseusersareconstantlygivenscores,newtargetsandfrequentrewardstokeepthemplaying.Manychildrennowspendhourseachdaytryingtoprogressthroughthelevelsofagameortogetahigherscorethantheirfriends.Thistypeofaddictioncanhaveeffectsrangingfromlackofsleeptoproblemsatschool,whenhomeworkissacrificedforafewmorehoursontheputerorconsole.Theriseinobesityinrecentyearshasalsobeenlinkedinparttothesedentarylifestyleandlackofexercisethatoftenapanygamingaddiction.

Inconclusion,itseemstomethatthepotentialdangersofvideogamesaremoresignificantthanthepossiblebenefits.
